COMMON PUMP AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT
PROBLEMS
Common
pump and associated equipment problems
Wells
should be chlorinated once per year
Samples of
well water should be analyzed for nitrate/nitrite and bacteria at a
minimum. At least once per year.
The well
pressure tank should be drained and the air pressure measured and
adjusted each year. This small job could save large electric bills and
premature equipment failure.
Ants,
geckos, spiders etc love electricity and like to hang out in the
pressure switch. This causes pump failure and services calls that should
be avoided.
When in
the area of your pump; notice if the pump is kicking on and off too
often. This could be a waterlog condition that should be corrected
quickly to prevent pump damage.
If the
pressure gauge does not work this should be replaced. The cost is cheap
and could prevent major problems.
Keep the
area around your pump and well clear at all times.
Make sure
the well is sealed from dirt and grass clipping entering.
If water
stands around your well head it should be slopped to drain away.
If you
have a new well drilled please properly seal the old well.
If your
pump is leaking have it repaired as soon as possible. If the pump runs
longer than it use to it should be checked for possible internal wear,
leaking pipes etc.
Air in
your water could mean a leaking suction pipe on the pump. If the well
tank was changed to an air bladder type without plugging the old style
bleed back valve. See if the air is before or after your water treatment
equipment.
Water
pressure builds up and drains off quickly. This could be a bad foot
valve, check valve or hole in suction pipe.
Bigger is
not always better! To small or to large a well pressure tank could be
costing you extra electricity, water retained to long in hot climate and
other problems. Size the pump and tank for your needs.
Well water
was good for years and now has iron and low ph problems. This could be
a whole in your well casing that in some cases can be repaired without
drilling a new well.
Always get
a second opinion before drilling a new well. Make sure the person knows
all of the options. An extra day of research could save you thousands
of dollars and a possible comparable problem is the new well.
